Kids Can Make A Difference
On July 8th the 6th Annual Ella and Aiden Lemonade Stand and Muffin Sale will take place in Charleswood in support of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba.
These amazing kids have already raised over $15,000 and have a huge goal of raising $5,000 this year. All funds raised will be used to create an outdoor play area for kids in hospital.
Spending time in Children’s Hospital is something the Anderson family knows all about.
Blake and Tammy knew something was up with their baby boy right from the start.
“Aiden was very, very colicky and a bit of a fussy baby, but our daughter Ella, who is just 21 months older than him was the complete opposite,” remembers Tammy. “When Aiden was 4 he was given back to back rounds of antibiotics for lung infections, and the doctors decided a chest x-ray was in order to see just how well Aiden was fighting the infection. It was that X-ray that finally gave us some answers.”
Aiden was diagnosed with situs inversus with dextrocardia; a condition where all of your organs are reversed from their normal positions. The condition itself can actually be fairly benign and, without complications, can go undetected unless discovered in a chest x-ray. Aiden however did experience complications, and was also diagnosed with kartagener with bronchiectasis which affects his lungs, and results in perpetual airway congestion.
Like all things, Aiden has taken his diagnosis in stride and even represented Children’s Hospital as their Champion Child in 2014-2015.
This amazing brother and sister team work tirelessly to grow their sale every year. All of that effort comes straight from the heart.
“I want to give back to the place that helps Aiden and so many other children,” says big sister Ella. “I love to see the total amount raised each year, and I know it is making a difference for so many kids.”
Her little brother agrees.
“It’s such a fun day with family and friends,” says Aiden. “It’s also really fun to see just how much money we will raise each year.”
It’s not only fun, but deeply appreciated by the Children’s Hospital Foundation.
“Ella and Aiden are an awesome example of kids helping kids”, says Courtney Leiman, Annual and Mid-Level Giving Officer, Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. “Since they started their fundraiser five years ago, they have raised over $15,000 and it grows every year. Their energy and passion is infectious and inspiring – showing that kids CAN make a difference.”
These amazing kids encourage others to make a difference too.
“Your first fundraiser may not be very big and it may not raise a lot of money but every little bit helps,” says Aiden. “Just keep going, and year after year you will succeed.”
“Believe in yourself,” adds Ella. “Every little bit helps.”
The 6th Annual Ella and Aiden Lemonade Stand and Muffin Sale takes place on Saturday, July 8 from 9am-3pm on the south side of Cathcart Street.
