Thank You Doesn’t Seem Enough

Cody and Holly didn’t know that the surgeon who was about to operate on their newborn daughter was one of the world’s top medical researchers of her condition. Or that he was leading ground-breaking research aimed at saving little ones just like her.

All they knew was that he was the doctor they were relying on to save their daughter’s life.

“We never thought it would happen to us,” says Holly, thinking back to the day that an ultrasound revealed their unborn baby had a hole in her diaphragm. “Things quickly went from joy to heartbreak.”

Baby girl Kara was born in Winnipeg and transferred immediately to NICU. After five days with no improvement, doctors knew Kara’s only hope was surgery.

That’s where Dr. Keijzer came in.

“Dr. Keijzer met with us and went over the procedure. He was very welcoming to our questions and concerns. Over time, as we would talk to the nurses, they would say ‘You are so lucky to have him. He is the best of the best for a baby with Kara’s condition.’”

Kara’s condition is called Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH). Babies born with CDH have a hole in their diaphragm and serious problems with their lungs.

Thanks to Dr. Keijzer and the medical team at your Children’s Hospital, Kara didn’t just survive – she is flourishing these days. From dressing up to baking to riding her bike, there is no stopping her!

Holly is passionate about the care the whole family received at Children’s. And the tremendous role that donors played in saving her daughter’s life.

Without supporters’ donations, the doctors like Dr. Keijzer would not have been here to save Kara’s life. And to further the research in order to give a better chance to all kids with CDH. Your donations are more than just money – they are life-giving.

Thank you doesn’t seem enough. If I could, I would love to personally thank everyone who supports the research done here at Children’s. We are so grateful to know this research continues.”
